AFE 2021: Hazard Mitigation Planning for Small, Rural and/or Tribal Communities: Focus on Metlakatla

October 27, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Hazard mitigation plans are the foundation for a community’s long-term strategy to prevent hazards from developing into disasters, or to reduce the effects of disasters when they occur. The hazard mitigation planning process is as important as the hazard mitigation plan itself as it creates a framework for risk-based decision making. This module will provide a brief overview of hazard mitigation planning and the Federal requirements of the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000. The panel will then discuss key planning steps taken, including community involvement, critical asset gathering, hazard identification, and mitigation project development, to successfully write and implement the 2019 Metlakatla Indian Community Tribal Mitigation Plan.
